Writers Guidelines
Northwest Coast is always on the lookout for new, skilled freelancers interested in writing about the greater Columbia-Pacific region. As a place-based publication, virtually any aspect of life in the area is potential material for a story. Unfortunately, as a quarterly magazine only a select few stories will have the opportunity to appear during a given year.
Northwest Coast is seeking quality, non-fiction stories that are fresh, insightful, and easy to read. All submissions should be fair-minded and in accordance with the basic rules of grammar and punctuation. Payment is made approximately one month prior to publication.
Feature Articles (1500-3000 words) are the centerpiece of the magazine. Usually three or four features appear per issue. Freelance submissions will be judged on their quality, thoroughness, and originality. Writers have a much better chance of getting their feature article published if it is accompanied by high-quality photographs. Please email a brief summary of the feature describing the arc of the story for editorial consideration. Payment, $200-$450.
Featurettes (600-1500 words) are snapshots of some particular person, place, or thing on the Northwest Coast and may appear in any section of the magazine from Nature to Food to History. The potential range of topics is vast, but make sure the writing is fresh and lively. As with feature articles, photographic support is strongly encouraged. Please submit complete manuscripts. Payment, $100-$200.
Off The Shelf (1200-1500 words) is a section that highlights a classic work (fiction or non-fiction) from the Northwest literary canon that inspires you. As the title suggests, the aim of the review is to get the book “off the shelf” and back into the hands of the reading public. Please submit complete manuscripts. Payment, $200.
Poetry. Northwest Coast works through The Salal Review (Lower Columbia College) and RAIN Magazine (Clatsop Community College) to acquire its poetry selections. Please submit your works of poetry to these organizations.
