Mercy on Nestucca Spit

November 18, 2008

By Matt Love

A November storm raged and I wanted to see 30-foot waves whipped up on the distant ocean meet their end at the landfall of Nestucca Spit. I wanted them to die at my feet and I didn’t want to share their death with anyone else. Read more

Salal (Gaultheria shallon)

Story and Artwork by Brian F. Harrison

On everyone’s list of Top Ten Plants That Define the Pacific Northwest, you’ll probably find Sitka spruce, red alder, hemlock, Douglas fir and western red cedar. But look between and beneath those fine trees and you’ll likely encounter another Top Ten contender: the salal, more humble maybe, but ubiquitous in northwest forests, clearcuts, roadsides, and indeed everywhere it can spread its rhizomes.

Who is Charlie Choker?

October 26, 2008

In Aberdeen, Grays Harbor College is home to the Chokers, one of the most appropriate yet misinterpreted names in the annals of collegiate history. The Chokers are not stranglers with a homicidal bent or athletes foreordained to implode at crunch time. Instead, the Chokers and their burly mascot, Charlie Choker, are named for the rugged men who wrestled giant logs out of Northwest forests. Charlie’s full name-though seldom used-is Charlie Choker Setter. Read more

Making Music On His Own Terms

By Jim LeMonds

Carl Wirkkala would love to make a splash on the country music scene. But if it happens, it will be on his terms.

The 33-year-old Castle Rock resident has written nearly 200 songs-a handful of which are currently being considered by publishers and producers-and released four albums. His sound is a combination of blues, folk, and old-school country. Something you might hear if Johnny Cash and Buzz Martin sat down to jam with Bob Dylan and Tracy Chapman.

Although Wirkkala writes about “the West” in general, his music is pertinent to the Pacific Northwest in particular, with subject matter that includes logging, mill closures, and used-up towns. Read more

George Vetter’s first exposure to the camera was his mother’s Brownie, which was used on special occasions to document their growing family in the 50’s and 60’s. After college, George joined the Peace Corps and the thought of spending two years in Honduras, Central America, was more than enough motivation to buy a new 35mm camera to record this important, unique chapter in his life.

His first exposure to the black and white darkroom was in Honduras with another Peace Corp volunteer. Their only guidance came in the form of a book. Geroge recalls, “It was a magic moment to see an image come to life in the chemical bath.” It wasn’t until 5 years later when he arrived in Cannon Beach and began photography lessons from Floyd Peterson that he got back into the darkroom. George was ready. He set up his own darkroom and began shooting prolifically wherever he went.

George’s love of photography is coupled with his love of travel-and good partners they do make. In 2007, his travels took him from coast to coast, border to border, and through Canada and Alaska. He still likes to do his own printing. George says, “My goal is to produce the best images that creativity and technology together can provide.” George’s work can be viewed at www.georgevetterfotoart.com.
